31 million Apple Watches Can't Be Wrong
Well, it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready...wait I have voice-enabled devices on my body now?
Fairly light day for links worth sharing. So much so that I’m just going to list a few #mustread articles from Voicebot.ai that came out over the last few days. And to be clear, Voicebot.ai is something you should read every day because Eric Hal Schwartz finds something great every day.
Two Voicebot.ai articles by Eric Hal Schwartz you should read from the last few days
Apple Gets 31 Million New Siri Endpoints in 2019
The headline says it all. Apple sold 31 million Siri-enabled watches in addition to all the iPhones they sold. Eric makes great points about the entire “voice-enabled wearable” market that you should read. Maybe that foldable phone sits in our pocket a lot in the future and we just use our watch and earbuds to get 80% of what we need?
New Arm Hardware Could Make Voice Assistants 50 Times More Powerful
50x increases are really good, right? As these chips get cheaper and smaller, this will get interesting.
Canalys’ research indicates that hearables and wearables will dwarf smartphone and speaker sales over the next few years. That seems to indicate we might see this chip in a lot of devices going forward.
More people getting bullish on Samsung & Bixby future
Bixby was quiet in 2019, but don't sleep on Samsung's assistant by Chris Velazco for Engadget
”Here's the thing, though: When it comes to developing smart home competence, Samsung has a distinct advantage over Amazon and Google, even if it's one people often seem to forget about. Unlike the other guys, Samsung makes everything, from televisions to dishwashers to microwaves, laundry machines, wireless routers; a comprehensive list would be just massive. Point is, unlike Amazon and Google, whose access to home appliances and other smart home goodies is limited to whatever their makers' teams can provide, Samsung gets to control the scope and utility of these integrations with as much nuance as it wants. For lack of a better term, Samsung's role here has the potential to be quite... Apple-y.”
Samsung could still best the Amazon Echo. Here's how by David Priest for CNET
“..many people are cautious about buying into ecosystems so early in their development. Tech giants like Google, after all, are notorious for killing off devices and integrations within years of selling them.”
After writing this email, I started thinking about when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007. Remember the “three devices in one” speech? It is still powerful. As I start thinking about foldable phones, voice-enabled headphones, and voice-enabled watches, it starts to seem like a lot of electronics to lug around. It will be interesting to see if we get another “duh!” product that comes out that makes it simpler to have mobile voice access. That presentation is worth watching again:
